After 20 years of OSX, Apple at the WWDC 2020 event unveiled a whole new Mac OS called Big Sur. Apple hosted a virtual event due to the on-going Covid-19 pandemic. The new Mac OS Big Sur is named after a mountainous region in coastal California.

In the Apple WWDC 2020 Event the new Mac OS ‘Big Sur’ introduces a significant redesign of the desktop operating system. The introduction of the whole new Mac OS Big Sur will be appealing for users to update from the existing version to the all-new v11.0.

“Mac OS Big Sur is a major update that advances the legendary combination of the power of UNIX with the ease of use of the Mac and delivers our biggest update to design in more than a decade,”. Said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior Vice President of software engineering.

“With its modern and clean look, huge improvements to key apps including Safari, Messages, and Maps, and new privacy features, we think everyone is going to love the breakthrough experience that Mac OS Big Sur offers,” Federighi added.

Mac OS Big Sur Redesign

The new Mac OS Big Sur is a spacious design that will make navigation easy with more controls at the fingertips. Announced at the Apple WWDC 2020 Event Changes have been made for window corners with a new palette of colours and intricacies. 

The new dock is designed to be more consistent with the icons to be in uniform with the Apple ecosystem. “Buttons and controls appear when needed, and recede when they’re not,” said Apple.

The menu bar went through a complete revamp in the new Mac OS Big Sur to deliver quick access to control the desktop. The newly updated ‘notification center’ has many interactive and newly designed widgets that come in all sizes. The new design in apps will allow accessing multiple windows easily. New symbols for toolbars, sidebars, and controls were added.

“The entire experience feels more focused, fresh, and familiar, reducing visual complexity and bringing users’ content front and center,” Apple added.

New Apple Safari Experience

Launched in 2003, Safari received a significant update, Safari’s javascript engine helps it to load 50 percent faster than Chrome, said Apple. Tabs are the important change introduced in the Mac OS Big Sur. With the new changes, Apple users will be able to see more tabs on their screens. The preview of the tab can be seen if the user hovers the mouse over it. “Displaying favicons by default to easily identify open tabs and giving users a quick preview of a page by simply hovering over the tab,” said Apple.

In the new Safari, Apple will introduce an improvised extension with the new Web Extensions API. That is, similar to the Chrome extension. The New Mac App Store is built, where users can view editorial recommendations and leaderboards. The privacy report feature will help the user to know the cross-site tracker blocked.

Message on new Mac OS includes newly introduced tools for better management of important conversations. Users can now pin their important conversations at the top of their messaging list. The new search function has been entirely redesigned for better navigation. 

Apple added 20+ new emojis and emoji customization options, also a new photo picker. “Users can now create and customize their Memoji on the Mac and express themselves with Memoji stickers to match their mood and personality. And with a new photo picker and #images, it’s easy to quickly share images, GIFs, and videos,” revealed Apple.

New Maps

The new group messaging feature has replies. The users can set a photo or emoji in their group message chats. New Mac OS ‘Maps’ have tools like ‘Guides’, a 360-degree view of the destination with ‘Look Around’. Also have the ability to see route maps on the Mac, and send it to the iPhone.
