After causing a sensation in February this year, announcing Tesla will soon accept Bitcoin as payment (which would go in effect in March), the company CEO soon changed his mind and said that Bitcoin was no longer accepted – in the interest of protecting the environment.
Now, once again Elon Musk has announced that Tesla will accept bitcoin payments again when the virtual currency is greener.
“When there’s confirmation of reasonable (~50 percent) clean energy usage by miners with a positive future trend, Tesla will resume allowing Bitcoin transactions,” Musk wrote on Twitter.
The science journal Nature recently published a study showing that China’s bitcoin mines risk jeopardising the country’s climate goals.
“The energy consumption and carbon emissions associated with Bitcoin mining are accelerating rapidly in China, according to a new study published in Nature Communications. Without more stringent regulations and policy changes, these impacts could undermine global sustainability efforts,” the report read.
