South Korea scrambled fighter jets today, 14 Dec 23 after four Russian and two Chinese planes entered its Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) over the Sea of Japan. The incursion lasting from 11:53 AM to 12:10 PM local time, did not breach South Korean airspace. However, it prompted Seoul to take precautionary measures. While South Korea has previously protested such manoeuvres, they are not illegal under international law.
This incident adds to regional tensions, particularly since Moscow and Beijing are staunch allies of North Korea. Notably, Washington recently expressed concerns about “growing and dangerous” military ties between Pyongyang and Moscow. Further adding to the complex situation, China considers the KADIZ illegitimate while demanding respect for its own expansive air defense zones.
Similar aerial incursions occurred in June and November 2022, highlighting a recurring pattern of regional friction. This recent episode underscores the delicate security balance in Northeast Asia and the potential for escalation, despite the absence of airspace violations.
